Promises, promises?

by R. Boyd

promises-over 50 year old chiriqui asphalt plant-photo by r. boydWhile we sometimes think nothing is being done to solve the problems in Panama with the roads, the water systems, or the river clean-up, it would be well to know that according to the World Economic Forum, Panama ranks number one in Central America for their infrastructure. Panama only has a land mass of 74,420 square km. (46,242 square miles), slightly smaller than the U.S. state of South Carolina. Yet, it has 4,300 km of paved roadways and 117 airports, 54 with paved runways, and it has the largest merchant fleet in the world.

Those of us who have lived in Panama for any length of time have become accustomed to hearing a lot of bochinche or rumor as to what is going to be repaired or fixed. We have come to believe that, “As Usual,” nothing is going to happen and nothing usually does.

Hydroelectric Plants: 101

by Laura Pedreschi

According to the internet list provided by the Public Services Authority (ASEP), there are currently ten hydroelectric projects on the Chiriquí Viejo river, but we know of at least 14 that are already practically approved.  While three more project proposals have recently been submitted, another five could be in the making.  In a worst-case scenario, there would be 22 hydroelectric projects along the length of this river, which runs for 162 kilometers.  Along a 69-kilometer stretch of the river, the projects will channel 90 percent of the water flow through tunnels or pipes, leaving a residual flow of only 10 percent.

For this and other reasons, 780 residents of the community of Volcan have petitioned President Ricardo Martinelli to put an immediate stop to the construction of new hydroelectric projects until an accumulative and transparent environmental impact study is available.

The public first needs to be informed and to petition the government for an audit of the hydroelectric projects already under construction, in order to determine whether the government is able to handle the enormous responsibility of developing the rivers of our province at the rate they intend.  We are extremely worried because we do not know what the consequences of these projects will be for our environment and our communities.

Mana from Jorge

It’s unfair to write a review of anything after doing hours of endless errands in David on a breathlessly hot summer’s day, mainly because after a full morning all you really want is drugs or death. But a new option for food in David is always an exciting possibility, so today I am talking about the new place to eat: “El Mana,” over the hill from Java juice.

Once you’ve found this restaurant, cleverly disguised as a residence, and chosen to leave your car hanging precariously on the side of the busy road out front (there is a car park, but for some reason everyone hugs the asphalt outside), you enter the casual atmosphere of this back patio restaurant. What you notice immediately is that it is…quiet. No traffic noise. The décor is hippy casual, wooden tables and chairs, herbs struggling to survive in clay pots, a lone organic coffee stand, some jars of homemade hot vinegar.
